“When our souls are in a spiritually healthy state and united to God through habits that accord with our nature, who is the source of all life, we flourish.” The best thing I received from reading this book was how to better order my habits through three steps: 1. Antecedent, 2. Behavior and 3. Consequence. For example, a poor habit would look like this. First, one sees the trigger and antecedent - a stressful job. This is then followed by the behavior - lashing out at co-workers in anger and with foul language. Finally, there is the consequence, that everyone is unhappy and stressed out. The positive change in habit would be to start by driving to work while praying (antecedent), arriving at work in a more peaceful manner and acknowledging co-workers and issues calmly (behavior), and then ending in a happier and less stressful work environment (consequence). In Heroic Habits, we learn that it requires work on our part, though still directed by God, to permeate our souls with grace. You can’t just sit back and let it happen. Unlike the song, you can’t just let “Jesus Take the Wheel;” you should offer your problems to God, but you still have to take responsibility for your actions in order to make a change. A St. Augustine quote in the book says, “God will not save you without your effort.” This book gives wonderful examples and guidance on how to make some changes in your life.
